چکیده

The spaceborne scatterometer is a microwave radar that provides high precision radiometric measures of the normalized radar cross section (σ) of the ocean surface. The backscatter is related to the superficial roughness that is in turn related to the local wind. Since microwave wavelengths are used the scatterometer, at first order, can be meant as an instrument which provides measurements independent of clouds and sun illumination therefore it is able to observe the internal structure of a Tropical Cyclone (TC). The relationship between the σ and the surface wind field is described by a geophysical model function (GMF). The model used in the ERS scatterometer processing is the well-known semi-empirical model CMOD4. Unfortunately this model is not tailored for high wind speeds, such as the case of TCs. This fact causes a poor quality in the wind field estimated through the scatterometer data acquired over a TC. In this paper we describe a study in view of a possible extension of the CMOD4 for high wind speeds. The study has been based on the ERS-2 σ measurements relevant to six selected TCs and the corresponding wind speeds obtained by employing the Holland model. We have selected six TCs and for each one we have developed a 3D wind speed pattern making use of the wind speed available through the NHC (National Hurricane Center) warnings. The wind speed so obtained is then correlated with the σ acquired over these six TCs. The results obtained in this work support the need to extend the CMOD4 model.

Cyclone Tracking with Ers-2 Scatterometer: Algorithm Performances and Post-processed Data Examples

Every year, Tropical Cyclones (TC) produce important damages on a high number of countries: the floods caused for the heavy rain, strong winds and bad sea conditions are producing human and economic losses. Satellite data can help the scientific comunity to study these events. In particular the processing of the backscattering measurements acquired over the ocean is giving important information...

Global wind speed retrieval from SAR

The global availability of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wave mode data from the European Remote Sensing (ERS) satellites ERS-1 and ERS-2, as well as ENVISAT, allows for the investigation of the wind field over the ocean on a global and continuous basis. For this purpose, 27 days of ERS-2 SAR wave mode data were processed, representing a total of 34 310 imagettes of size 10 km 5 km, available ...

A BOUNDARY-FITTED SHALLOW WATER MODEL OF SIMULATE TIDE AND SURGE FOR THE HEAD BAY OF BENGAL – APPLICATION TO CYCLONE SIDR (2007) AND AILA (2009)

Severe Tropical Cyclones associated with surges frequently hits the coastal region of Bangladesh. For a reliable hydrodynamic model to simulate the severity of such cyclones, it is necessary to incorporate the meteorological and hydrological inputs properly. In order to incorporate the coastlines and the island boundaries properly in the numerical scheme a very fine grid resolution along the co...

The Influence of Natural Climate Variability on Tropical Cyclones, and Seasonal Forecasts of Tropical Cyclone Activity

In the first part of this chapter, we give a review of the relationship of climate and tropical cyclones on various time scales, from intra-seasonal to decadal. The response of tropical cyclone activity to natural modes of variability, such as El Niño-Southern Oscillation and the Madden Julian Oscillation in various regions of the world are discussed. Genesis location, track types and intensity...
